Several products and procedures – that are safe and effective – are available to treat undesirable freckles. Though freckles are harmless, it may develop into a type of skin cancer called melanoma. Freckles that are changing or growing should be checked by a doctor.
Treatments include bleaching creams, topical retinoids, chemical peels, cryosurgery and laser treatment. Bleaching creams with hydroquinone and kojic acid may be purchased without prescription, but those with higher concentrations should be prescribed by a doctor. Vitamin A acid and Retin-A also helps lighten freckles. Cryosurgery uses light freeze with liquid nitrogen for treatment. Laser treatment eliminates freckles with low risk of scarring.
