Free radicals are high-energy molecules that can insert themselves in the structure of cells and interrupt its normal function. Studies have shown that skin exposure to UV radiation results to the generation of a huge amount of free radicals which damages the skin’s DNA – that in turn may cause skin cancer, premature aging and affects the skin’s immunity.
Anti oxidants, on the other hand, fights free radicals by absorbing high-energy molecules. Examples of anti oxidants are vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, glutathione and various bioflavonoids that are present in plant-sourced products. These anti oxidants may be absorbed by the body through the foods we eat and the skin care products applied on the skin.
